Project KickStart Announces Template Contest for International Project Management Day

Project management software company crowdsources template creation through template contest in celebration of International Project Management Day.

Berkeley, CA -- November 4, 2010 -- Appreciate project managers and their teams on November 4th for International Project Management Day. Managing projects is difficult, and although some people specifically work as project managers, many others should also be recognized who are thrown into the role intermittently throughout their careers.

Throughout history, well before the term 'project management' was coined, people have invented tools to help manage projects. The pencil, invented in the 1790s, and the calendar, invented in prehistory, were early project management tools. To-do lists have helped people manage small projects probably ever since humans began writing. However, the story of formal project management began as recently as the second half of the 19th century, with the work of Fredrick Winslow Taylor and Henry Gantt. Henry Gantt's 1910 invention of the Gantt chart is still used in project management today. The Project Management Institute (PMI), formed in 1969, professionalized and modernized project management tools and techniques through systematic analysis and dissemination. Beginning in the late 1970s, project management software has augmented these tools. It has continued to gain momentum and popularity since. The use of templates in project management software now makes starting typical projects even easier.

In honor of International Project Management Day, Project KickStart has announced an open call (crowdsourcing) to submit project templates for an opportunity to win a free copy of Project KickStart.

Templates are generalizations of standard projects that can be customized to fit a specific use. Templates created by experts in a field can help novices begin something that's new to them. For example, an event planning template could help a small company design the release event for their new product, but it could also help a non-profit plan a fundraising walk or even help a family plan a celebration.

The term 'crowdsourcing' was first coined by Jeff Howe in "The Rise of Crowdsourcing" in the June 2006 edition of Wired magazine. Howe described crowdsourcing as "distributed labor networks [that] are using the Internet to exploit the spare processing power of millions of human brains." Crowdsourcing has been used by thousands of companies to accomplish a wide range of tasks, from providing stock photos to solving difficult scientific problems.
